BOSCO VERTICALE

Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) is a pair of residential towers in the “Porta Nuova“district of Milan, Italy. 

Main contractor of the project is Hines Italia SGR S.p.A. on behalf of the real estate fund “INPGI Hines Fund”. 

Termigas is performing the electrical and mechanical works.

The project was designed as part of the rehabilitation of the historic district “Porta Nuova” and it consists of two residential towers of which the largest is 24 floors and 111.15 meters high (called Tower E) and the smaller is 17 floors and 78 meters high (called Tower D). The towers will host more than 900 trees (approximately 550 in the first and 350 trees in the second towers) on 8900 m² of terraces. 

The construction of the towers began in late 2009 and early 2010. Between mid-2010 and early 2011 construction progressed very slowly and the towers rose by only five floors while the core rose to the seventh floor. Construction progressed throughout 2011, and by the beginning of 2012 the structures were completed, and construction of the facades and installation of the plants began.

The towers were designed by Stefano Boeri, Gianandrea Barreca and Giovanni La Varra. It is called Bosco Verticale because each tower will house trees between three and six meters which will help mitigate air pollution and produce oxygen. in a most wide project for metropolitan reforestation that contributes to the regeneration of the environment and urban biodiversity without the implication of expanding the city upon the territory.

Bosco Verticale is a model of vertical densification of nature within the city and also a system that optimizes, recuperates and produces energy. The diversity of the plants and their characteristics produce humidity, absorb CO2 and dust particles, producing oxygen and protect from radiation and acoustic pollution, improving the quality of living spaces and saving energy.

Pulant irrigation will be produced to great extent through the filtering and reuse of the grey waters produced by the building.

Additionally eolian and photovoltaic energy systems will contribute, together with the aforementioned microclimate to increase the degree of energetic self sufficiency of the two towers.
